Will Richardson, in his Book, Blogs, Wikis, & Podcasts identified the following 10 "Big Shifts":

Open Content

- When kids ask questions that they don't know the answer too, it is now easier for them to find answers on their own from home. The digital divide can create a barrier from this occuring. Unless students are in the classroom using computers, access may be limited.

Does technology motivate independence? or vice versa? Often times they are told that they can not use the internet unless mom or dad is there, so is that creating a dependence. Middle school kids are more capable of finding info on the web then they are in a book. More motivated by the web then by a book. Is the infornation good information? Internet seves more of a younger tendency, attention span is shorter so the internet satisfies the instant gratification. Are they actually reading the material? If you want a depth of content you go to a book, however the internet is evolving and that depth will be there. So how do we teach kids to go that deep into the web content?

Kids are more and more frequently going to the internet for sources rather than books.

Many Teachers and 24/7 Learning

- Distance barriers are becomming more and more non-existence. Communication barriers are falling to the side since there are so many different ways to get in touch with someone. You can reach them at any time and at their convenience they can get back to you.


Social/Collaborative Construction of Knowledge

- Information can remain on the web that is old and out of date, so how will you be able to ensure info is uptodate. Speaks to collaboration outside of just the immediate classroom, work can be shared with people all over the internet. Is it isolation leading to collaboration? People are working independently on a group outcome, by being able to work at home it is keeping you isolated.

Teaching is Conversation, Not Lecture

- Agree with the idea. Think that it is reasonable but how does it fit? Can be done within classroom without the use of the internet. May not be technology based, but a shift in practice. Internet comes in by giving students a sense of having an audience for there work outside of the classroom. May not be applicable to younger grade levels. Who is seeking out this knoweldge? Is anyone actually listening? Is the web the ideal place for their voices to be heard?


Know "Where" Learning

- Knowing where to find stuff is more important than knowing what the answer is. It is important for kids to know things. As long as you know how to find the answer you are fine. There are the basic things you need to know, but knowing resources is key.

Readers Are No Longer Just Readers

- In the past we could be sure what they were reading was true, but now since anyone can write to the web readers need to learn how to be critical of their readings.

The Web as Notebook

- Each of us individually can use the web as a notebook to store ideas and information found. Can be used as a knowledge storehouse. A good way to organize resources.

Writing Is No Longer Limited to Text

- Difference between a writing voice and a talking voice, and by taking text out of the equation is difficult.

Tools are adding another way to express themselves, by allowing them to talk or create video allows for different genres. Caters to the multiple intelligences... should not get rid of text but add to the text.

Mastery Is the Product, Not the Test

- Higher level thinking, being able to apply what you learn vs just reguritating it back. Allowing for explaining your thinking gets past the rote tests in schools.

Contribution, Not Completion as the Ultimate Goal

- Reminded of our grad school class. When we are writing prompts for students, and creating projects, by allowing studnets to know that there work is being seen by the world will make it more meaningful.
